Mintlayer is a Bitcoin Layer 2 sidechain developed to integrate DeFi, smart contracts, and tokenization into the Bitcoin ecosystem. It eliminates the need for "wrapped" tokens by utilizing a UTXO model similar to Bitcoin’s own architecture. This design maximizes interoperability and allows for the seamless creation of decentralized financial applications directly anchored to the security of the Bitcoin blockchain.
Unlike Stacks, which operates on its own consensus mechanism, Mintlayer is anchored directly to Bitcoin blocks. While the Lightning Network is specifically optimized for high-speed payments, Mintlayer focuses on asset issuance and complex DeFi protocols. Furthermore, Mintlayer maintains compatibility with Lightning, allowing it to support both microtransactions and sophisticated decentralized finance tools within a single ecosystem.
ML originally launched as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Following the Mainnet launch in early 2024, users must migrate their tokens to the native Mintlayer blockchain to utilize them for staking or network fees. Migration is handled through the official Mintlayer Migration Portal, which is expected to remain operational until January 2026. After this period, the ERC-20 version will be phased out in favor of the native token.
Staking on Mintlayer is non-custodial and offers two options: delegation or pool operation. Users can delegate as little as 1 ML to an existing pool through the Mojito Wallet without needing to stay online. To run a staking pool, a minimum pledge of 40,000 ML is required, and the node must remain online 24/7. Tokens remain under the user's control during delegation, and there is a security unbonding period of approximately 10 days (7,200 blocks) before tokens become spendable again.
Atomic Swaps allow users to exchange native BTC for ML or other tokens (MLS-01) peer-to-peer without relying on a centralized intermediary, bridge, or "wrapped" assets. This technical feature ensures that trades are executed securely and directly on-chain. Additionally, Mintlayer features a "Free Market" for gas fees, allowing users to pay transaction costs in any MLS-01 token, such as a stablecoin, provided a block signer accepts it.
The primary wallet for the ecosystem is the Mojito Wallet, available as a mobile app and browser extension. For node operators, the Mintlayer Node GUI is necessary. Native ML tokens can be traded on major exchanges such as LBank. When withdrawing or depositing, it is important to verify that the exchange supports the native Mintlayer network, as some platforms may still utilize the legacy ERC-20 version.
