eEIGEN is a Liquid Restaking Token (LRT) that represents EIGEN tokens deposited into the ether.fi vault. It allows users to earn rewards on their staked assets while maintaining liquidity. Instead of locking capital for the lengthy duration required by the native protocol, holders receive eEIGEN, which represents their stake plus any accrued rewards. This enables users to keep their assets productive across various decentralized platforms without sacrificing staking benefits.

EIGEN is the native governance and work token for the EigenLayer protocol. When staked natively, it typically requires a 24-day withdrawal period, during which the assets are illiquid. eEIGEN serves as a liquid wrapper for these staked tokens. It offers a shorter withdrawal window of approximately 10 days and can be traded or utilized in other decentralized applications, providing significantly more flexibility and liquidity than native staking.

Rewards for eEIGEN are autocompounding, meaning they are automatically reflected in the token's value. Rather than manual claims, the value of eEIGEN increases relative to EIGEN over time. These rewards are derived from 'LRT²', which represents a share of pooled rewards collected from various restaking activities. This mechanism ensures that the benefits of restaking are continuously integrated into the token's exchange rate.

Holding eEIGEN allows users to participate in multiple reward programs simultaneously. Holders earn ether.fi Points, which are used for loyalty tracking and potential future distributions, as well as Veda Points from the protocol managing the vault. Furthermore, because the underlying assets are restaked into EigenLayer, eEIGEN holders remain eligible for programmatic incentives or airdrops distributed by the Eigen Foundation to restaking participants.

There are two main ways to exit an eEIGEN position. Users can initiate a standard withdrawal through the vault, which takes approximately 10 days to process. This period is a safety measure to manage the underlying protocol's unbonding requirements. Alternatively, for immediate access to funds, users can swap eEIGEN for other assets on secondary markets and decentralized trading platforms, though this may involve slippage or trading at a slight discount.

The eEIGEN vault utilizes the BoringVault architecture and has undergone multiple security audits to ensure protocol safety. However, inherent risks include 'slashing,' where a portion of the stake could be lost if node operators misbehave. ether.fi mitigates this by socializing risks across all users to minimize individual impact. As with any smart contract-based product, users should be aware of the technical risks associated with decentralized restaking protocols.
