KINTSUGI (KINT) FAQ
What is Kintsugi (KINT) and how does it relate to Interlay?
Kintsugi is a decentralized protocol built on the Kusama network that enables the creation of kBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset. It functions as the "canary network" for Interlay, meaning it serves as a real-value testing ground where new features and innovations are deployed before they reach the Interlay mainnet on Polkadot. Its primary goal is to bring Bitcoin into the DeFi ecosystem in a trustless and decentralized manner.
What is kBTC and what makes its security model unique?
kBTC is a 1:1 representation of Bitcoin on the Kusama blockchain. Unlike centralized wrapped Bitcoin assets that rely on a single custodian, kBTC is trustless and secured by a decentralized network of "Vaults." These Vaults must provide multi-collateral insurance. If a Vault misbehaves or fails to return the BTC, its collateral is automatically slashed to reimburse the user at a premium, ensuring the asset is always backed.
What are the primary functions of the KINT token?
KINT is the native utility and governance token for the Kintsugi network. It is used for participating in governance by voting on protocol upgrades and treasury allocations, staking to earn rewards and gain voting power, and paying for transaction fees on the Kintsugi parachain. It aligns the interests of all participants within the ecosystem.
How does the Stake-to-Vote (vKINT) mechanism operate?
To participate in governance, users must lock their KINT tokens for a chosen period of up to 96 weeks. In return, they receive vKINT (voting KINT). vKINT is a non-transferable measure of a user's commitment to the network. The longer the lock-up duration, the more voting power and rewards the user receives, incentivizing long-term participation over short-term speculation.
What role do Vaults play in the Kintsugi ecosystem and how can one participate?
Vaults are the backbone of the Kintsugi bridge, responsible for holding the physical Bitcoin that backs kBTC. Anyone can become a Vault by running the Kintsugi client and locking required collateral like KSM or DOT. Vaults earn rewards in KINT and fees in BTC for their security services, but they face liquidation if their collateral value falls too low relative to the BTC they hold.
How is the KINT token distributed and where can it be traded?
KINT has a community-focused distribution model with no public sale or ICO. Approximately 70% of the initial 10 million supply is allocated to the community through airdrops, crowdloan rewards, and block rewards, while 30% is reserved for the team and early investors. KINT can be traded on prominent cryptocurrency exchanges, including LBank, and various decentralized exchanges within the Kusama ecosystem.
