Etho Protocol (ETHO) is a decentralized storage network that rebranded from its original name, Ether-1. While it evolved from an Ethereum fork, it is now a dedicated infrastructure project. It should not be confused with Ethos Protocol, which is a separate project focusing on on-chain reputation. Etho Protocol specifically provides decentralized hosting and storage using its ethoFS technology. Older documentation referring to Ether-1 remains relevant as it represents the same ecosystem.
The network offers three distinct node tiers for users to support the ecosystem: Service Nodes (SN), Masternodes (MN), and Gateway Nodes (GN). Service Nodes are the entry level, requiring approximately 5,000 ETHO collateral, 20GB storage, and 1GB RAM. Masternodes are the mid-tier option, needing 15,000 ETHO collateral, 40GB storage, and 2GB RAM. Gateway Nodes are the highest tier, requiring 30,000+ ETHO collateral and more robust hardware to serve as data relays.
ethoFS is the protocol's decentralized file system. It utilizes the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) for storage but adds a unique blockchain indexing layer to manage data permanence and node payments. This allows for truly immutable web hosting. Because data is distributed across a global network of community-owned nodes, no single entity can remove or censor a website or file once it is deployed to the network.
While ETHO operates on its own Layer 1 mainnet, Wrapped ETHO (wETHO) versions exist on networks like Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Base. This multi-chain presence increases liquidity and enables usage across various decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms. To move tokens between the native mainnet and other chains, users must utilize the official Etho Bridge to securely wrap or unwrap their assets.
Etho Protocol is an EVM-compatible chain, allowing it to be added to standard Web3 wallets like MetaMask as a Custom RPC. Users need to input the Network Name (Etho Protocol), New RPC URL (https://rpc.ethoprotocol.com), Chain ID (1313114), and Currency Symbol (ETHO). For hardware wallet users, the Etho Protocol app can be installed on Ledger devices and managed through compatible third-party wallet interfaces.
Node operators earn ETHO tokens by securing the blockchain through a hybrid PoW/PoS model and providing storage capacity via ethoFS.
