rETH is the liquid staking token you receive after depositing ETH into the protocol. It represents your staked ETH along with any accrued staking rewards, and its value appreciates against ETH over time. RPL, on the other hand, is the protocol's native utility and governance token. It is primarily utilized by node operators as collateral to secure their operations and to earn additional rewards, while also granting voting power in the protocol's governance.
rETH is a "value-accruing" token. This means that unlike some other liquid staking tokens where your token balance might increase, you maintain a constant amount of rETH. Its value relative to ETH consistently grows as the underlying staked ETH within the Rocket Pool protocol earns and accumulates staking rewards from the Ethereum network. Essentially, each rETH token becomes convertible to more ETH over time.
Running a Rocket Pool node offers several benefits over solo staking. Solo staking demands a full 32 ETH, whereas Rocket Pool enables you to operate a complete Ethereum validator with significantly less capital, requiring only 8 ETH or 16 ETH, plus RPL collateral. Additionally, node operators earn a commission, typically around 14%, on the ETH managed for the protocol's users. Furthermore, holding RPL grants voting power in the Protocol DAO (pDAO), empowering holders to influence critical decisions regarding protocol upgrades, operational parameters, and inflation settings, thereby shaping the future of the platform.
