wgBera is a Liquid Staking Token (LST) native to the Berachain ecosystem, developed by Smilee Finance. It represents BERA tokens that are staked with validators. Unlike traditional staking where assets are locked and idle, wgBera is designed to be "active" in decentralized finance. This allows users to retain liquidity and participate in various DeFi protocols while their underlying assets contribute to the network's security.
Users can obtain wgBera by depositing native BERA tokens into the Smilee Finance protocol at a 1:1 ratio. It is also available for acquisition through trading on exchanges such as LBank or via Berachain-native decentralized exchanges. This provides multiple pathways for users to enter the ecosystem and start utilizing their tokens within Berachain’s Proof of Liquidity system.
The distinction is primarily between legacy and current standards. gBera is a rebasing token from earlier versions of the Smilee protocol and is now deprecated. wgBera is a non-rebasing, ERC-4626 compliant token. It is the current standard intended for use in Berachain’s Reward Vaults and liquidity pools. The security of wgBera relies on the integrity of the Smilee Finance smart contracts and the engine managing the underlying BERA.
