Karlsen is a decentralized cryptocurrency and Web3 project that operates as a fork of the Kaspa network. It is built using a BlockDAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) architecture, which allows for parallel blocks and high transaction throughput without compromising network security. This structure enables the project to maintain rapid block times and near-instant transaction confirmation. The primary mission of Karlsen is to promote decentralization by maintaining ASIC resistance. While many Proof of Work networks eventually become dominated by industrial-scale mining farms using specialized ASIC hardware, Karlsen utilizes a specific hashing algorithm known as KarlsenHash. This algorithm was later updated to KarlsenHashV2, which is based on the FishHash framework. These technical choices are designed to be memory-intensive and energy-efficient, specifically favoring GPU mining. By making the network accessible to standard consumer hardware, the project aims to empower small-scale, independent miners and prevent the concentration of hashing power. Beyond its core ledger, the project is expanding its utility through the development of a sidechain. This sidechain is built using the Cosmos SDK and is intended to bring smart contract functionality to the ecosystem. The integration of smart contracts allows for the creation of decentralized applications and decentralized finance solutions. Furthermore, this sidechain is designed to support cross-chain interoperability, enabling the movement of assets and data between Karlsen and other blockchain networks like Kaspa or Ethereum. Karlsen was launched as a community-driven initiative with a focus on transparency and fairness. The project did not conduct an initial coin offering and did not have a pre-mining phase for the development team. This fair launch model ensures that all participants have an equal opportunity to acquire tokens through mining or network participation from the outset. The project describes its relationship with its parent network, Kaspa, as one of friendly cohabitation, sharing many architectural benefits while specifically catering to the GPU mining community. The KLS token serves as the native utility asset within the network.
