No, the Cosmos Hub does not host its own smart contracts or dApps. It is designed as a minimalist hub that prioritizes security and interoperability. Instead of building directly on the Hub, developers use the Cosmos SDK to create their own independent 'AppChains.' These sovereign chains can then connect to the Cosmos Hub and other networks, allowing for a more scalable and customizable environment than traditional smart contract platforms.
Staking ATOM involves delegating tokens to validators to secure the network in exchange for rewards. However, there is a 21-day unbonding period; once you start unstaking, you cannot move your tokens or earn rewards for three weeks. Users also face 'slashing' risks, where a portion of staked ATOM is permanently removed if their chosen validator goes offline or acts maliciously. Additionally, rewards do not auto-compound, meaning users must manually claim and re-stake them to maximize growth.
To qualify for airdrops from new projects, you typically must stake ATOM via a non-custodial wallet. Users should avoid staking with validators managed by other centralized exchanges or those with 0% commission fees, as these are often excluded from eligibility. While specific project requirements vary, the general community consensus suggests staking a minimum of 10 to 25 ATOM to be eligible for most snapshots. IBC is the protocol that allows tokens and data to move between independent blockchains trustlessly and almost instantly. It is the core technology behind the 'Internet of Blockchains.' Interchain Security (ICS) is a feature where the Cosmos Hub 'lends' its security to smaller consumer chains. In this model, ATOM stakers help secure these additional networks and, in return, receive rewards in the native tokens of those chains, providing diversified yield for ATOM holders.
