Xi Jinping Meets with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
According to Xinhua News Agency, on the afternoon of September 12 local time, President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, India, during the 18th Meeting of BRICS Leaders. The two leaders exchanged views candidly and in depth and reached important consensus that China and India should be partners. Xi Jinping said that China has always viewed and developed China-India relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. Over the past two years, I have met with Prime Minister Modi twice, leading China-India relations from a “re-start” to a “re-upgrade.” Mechanism-based exchanges between the two countries have gradually resumed, the list of cooperation has continued to grow, and bilateral trade has reached a new high. This situation has not come easily and is worth cherishing. China and India have different national conditions, and can fully complement each other, support each other, help each other succeed, and develop together. Faced with a turbulent and intertwined international situation, China and India, as the two most populous countries in the world and important members of the Global South, shoulder important responsibilities. The two sides should care about the future of humanity and the well-being of their peoples, work together to promote high-quality development of “greater BRICS cooperation,” and provide more positive energy for promoting world peace, stability, development, and prosperity. Xi Jinping offered four views on promoting steady and long-term development of China-India relations. First, calibrate the direction with an objective and rational strategic understanding. China and India are cooperative partners rather than rivals, and are each other’s development opportunities rather than threats. This is a strategic judgment made based on the development stage and international environment of the two countries, and it is in line with the common interests of the two countries and their peoples. Second, achieve mutual success with a concept of cooperation and win-win results. The two sides should focus on development, the greatest common denominator, and strengthen friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation. Expand cooperation in people-to-people exchanges, direct flights, and other areas, and effectively improve the public opinion foundation of bilateral relations. Balance and resolve each other’s economic and trade concerns, and promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations. Third, remove interference with political wisdom of mutual respect and mutual understanding. Work to advance bilateral relations and boundary issues in parallel and in mutual promotion, and safeguard peace and tranquility in border areas. Fourth, contribute to the world through open and inclusive multilateral cooperation. Support each other in serving as BRICS chair, strengthen cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the Group of Twenty, work together to address global challenges, and clearly uphold international fairness and justice. Modi said that I have held many productive meetings with President Xi Jinping, which have led India-China relations in a positive direction and are in the common interests of the more than 2.8 billion people of the two countries. The two great civilizations of India and China have exchanged and learned from each other and advanced hand in hand for thousands of years. India has always viewed India-China relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and is willing to be a partner rather than a rival with China, regarding each other’s development as an opportunity rather than a challenge. India adheres to an independent foreign policy, and the development of relations with China is not affected by any third party. India’s policies and positions on Taiwan and Tibet-related issues have not changed, and it does not allow any forces to engage in anti-China activities in India. India is willing, on the basis of mutual respect and mutual trust, to maintain high-level exchanges with China, strengthen strategic communication, promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and deepen people-to-people exchanges, so as to promote greater development of bilateral relations. The two sides should work together to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas. India thanks China for supporting India’s hosting of the BRICS Leaders’ Meeting and will fully support China in serving as BRICS chair next year. India is willing to closely coordinate and cooperate with China, jointly promote stronger cooperation among the Global South, promote world multipolarization and economic growth, and be a force for stability and progress in a turbulent world.
