Yearn Finance is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that functions as a yield aggregator. Its primary goal is to maximize returns on users' crypto assets through automated strategies. YFI is the native governance token of Yearn Finance. Holding YFI grants users the ability to vote on various proposals and actively participate in the decision-making processes that shape the protocol's future. It empowers the community to direct the development and evolution of the Yearn ecosystem.

Yearn Vaults (yVaults) can be best understood as automated crypto savings accounts. Users deposit their digital assets into these vaults. Subsequently, Yearn's smart contracts take over, strategically deploying these assets across the broader DeFi ecosystem. The main objective is to generate optimal yield. A key feature is that any yield earned is automatically compounded back into the vault, simplifying complex yield farming strategies and making them accessible for everyday users.

yvYFI is a specific yVault Token received when a user deposits their native YFI tokens into a Yearn yVault. It acts as a representation of the user's proportional share within that particular yVault. As the yVault actively generates profits through its various yield strategies, the underlying value of the assets within the vault increases. Consequently, the share price of each yvYFI token appreciates, meaning when you redeem your yvYFI, you receive more YFI than you initially deposited, reflecting the accumulated earnings.

yVaults employ a variety of sophisticated strategies to optimize and generate yield from deposited assets. These strategies are dynamic and can involve multiple DeFi activities. Common methods include supplying assets as collateral to lending protocols, borrowing other assets to leverage positions, providing liquidity to decentralized exchanges to earn trading fees, or engaging in "farming" by acquiring other tokens which are then sold for profit. Yearn's advanced algorithms continuously monitor the DeFi landscape, automatically moving funds between different protocols and strategies to identify and capitalize on the best available yield opportunities, all while aiming to manage risk.

Yearn Finance has evolved its yVault technology through several iterations. Initially, there was v1, which has largely been phased out from active use. The widely utilized version currently is v2 vaults, often integrated with various DeFi protocols, including those in the Curve ecosystem, to implement diverse yield strategies. The latest advancement is v3 vaults. These are designed to be ERC-4626 compliant, offering enhanced features such as the flexibility for single or multi-strategy deployment. This provides users with greater control over their investments and caters to a broader spectrum of risk appetites and preferences.

While yVaults simplify complex yield farming, it's crucial for users to understand the inherent risks. Unlike simply holding assets or basic staking, vaults are generally considered to carry a higher risk profile, and there is always a possibility of loss. Potential risks include smart contract exploits in Yearn itself or in the underlying protocols it interacts with, impermanent loss (though strategies are designed to mitigate this), and general market volatility. While strategies aim to allow withdrawals at any time, liquidity constraints in extreme market conditions could also pose challenges. Users should conduct thorough research before depositing assets.
