Wrapped Aave Optimism WETH (waoptweth) is a "Static aToken" (StataToken) that acts as a wrapper for interest-bearing aOptWETH. This token is created when users deposit WETH into the Aave protocol on the Optimism network. Unlike standard aTokens that use a rebasing mechanism to increase your wallet balance as interest is earned, waoptweth keeps a static balance. Instead of more tokens appearing in your wallet, the underlying value of each waoptweth token increases relative to WETH over time.

WETH is standard Wrapped Ether, maintaining a 1:1 ratio with ETH. aOptWETH is the yield-bearing version provided by Aave; its balance increases automatically in your wallet to reflect earned interest. In contrast, waoptweth is a static wrapper for that yield-bearing asset. While aOptWETH changes in quantity, waoptweth changes in value. This makes waoptweth more compatible with various decentralized finance protocols that cannot handle fluctuating wallet balances.

Most digital wallets do not automatically detect specialized wrapper tokens. To view your balance, you must manually import the token using its specific contract address on the Optimism network: 0x464b808c2c7e04b07e860fdf7a91870620246148. Additionally, because the assets are held within a wrapper contract, standard protocol dashboards may not list them as a basic deposit. The tokens are technically inside the static wrapper rather than sitting as a direct lending position in the primary interface.

The main benefit of waoptweth is technical compatibility across the DeFi ecosystem. Many decentralized exchanges and yield aggregators are not designed to support rebasing tokens where balances change automatically. By using the static waoptweth version, you can provide liquidity in various pools or use your assets in other protocols to earn additional trading fees and rewards. This allows you to stack the interest earned from Aave with other potential yield sources safely.

There are two common ways to retrieve your original assets. First, you can use a supported DeFi interface or a dedicated wrapper tool to convert waoptweth back into aOptWETH, then use the lending protocol's withdrawal function to receive WETH. Alternatively, you can swap waoptweth directly for WETH on a decentralized exchange. If choosing the swap method, always verify the available liquidity and potential slippage to ensure you are receiving the correct value for your yield-bearing tokens.

Because waoptweth is a yield-bearing asset, its exchange rate is designed to increase over time. One waoptweth token represents your original deposit plus all the interest accumulated since the wrapper was initialized. Consequently, its value relative to WETH will always trend upward. When you eventually unwrap the token or trade it back for WETH, the higher exchange rate ensures that you receive your initial principal along with the lending rewards earned during the time you held the token.
