The project originated as part of the Terra ecosystem, created by Terraform Labs. It was initially known as TerraUSD and functioned as an algorithmic stablecoin. Its primary purpose was to maintain a steady value relative to a major global currency through a decentralized supply management system. This system used a specific minting and burning process involving a secondary governance token to balance supply and demand without requiring physical cash reserves. In mid-2022, the project encountered a significant crisis that resulted in the asset losing its intended stability. Following this event, the original developers moved on to a new network, and the existing infrastructure was renamed Terra Classic. Consequently, the token was rebranded to its current name. The technical mechanisms that once automatically managed the token supply were permanently deactivated by the community to prevent further instability. Currently, Wrapped USTC is maintained by a decentralized group of community members rather than a central organization. This community oversees various governance actions and explores ways to utilize the remaining tokens within the Web3 space.
