Organizations can implement comprehensive audits to identify unauthorized AI usage, alongside monitoring network activity and analyzing user behavior patterns. Employing data loss prevention (DLP) solutions helps prevent sensitive information from being uploaded to unapproved AI tools, while endpoint detection and response (EDR) systems can provide further vigilance. Crucially, establishing clear policies for approved AI tools, conducting regular employee education on AI risks, and performing consistent audits are essential steps for effective management and mitigation of Shadow AI risks.

A wide array of sensitive organizational data is highly vulnerable to risks from Shadow AI. Shadow AI, however, specifically concerns the unsanctioned use of artificial intelligence models or AI-powered tools. This introduces unique and amplified risks, particularly related to the processing of sensitive data by third-party AI services, potential data training on proprietary information, and the unique challenges of AI governance and ethical considerations that go beyond general IT security concerns.
