Kintsugi is a decentralized blockchain network that serves as the canary network for the Interlay project. Built using the Substrate framework, it operates as a parachain on the Kusama network. As a canary network, Kintsugi acts as an experimental environment where new features and innovations are tested with real economic value before being deployed on Interlay, which is the equivalent project on the Polkadot network. The primary objective of Kintsugi is to bridge Bitcoin into the Kusama ecosystem, enabling Bitcoin holders to utilize their assets within various decentralized finance applications. Its flagship product is kBTC, a decentralized asset that is backed one-to-one by Bitcoin. This bridge allows users to bring their Bitcoin into the Kusama network to participate in activities such as lending, borrowing, and swapping across different parachains like Karura, Shiden, and Moonriver. The system relies on a decentralized network of collateralized vaults to maintain the security and the one-to-one backing of kBTC. These vaults are operated by independent participants who lock up collateral to guarantee the safety of the Bitcoin they hold. If a vault behaves maliciously or fails to fulfill its obligations, its collateral is used to reimburse users. This mechanism is based on the XCLAIM protocol, which was developed by the project founders and is designed to be trustless and censorship-resistant. The native token of the network is KINT. It functions as the primary governance and utility token within the Kintsugi ecosystem. KINT holders have the authority to participate in the decision-making process for the network by voting on protocol upgrades, allocating resources, and electing council members. The voting power of a holder is typically determined by the amount of KINT they have locked and the duration of that lock. Additionally, KINT is used as a medium for paying transaction fees on the network and as a reward for participants who contribute to the security and operation of the system, such as vault operators. Kintsugi was founded by Alexei Zamyatin and Dominik Harz, researchers who focused on blockchain security and decentralization. The project is supported by Kintsugi Labs, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and growth of the network.
