In the standard Cosmos environment, staking ATOM typically requires a lengthy unbonding period during which assets cannot be moved or traded. Drop Protocol addresses this by allowing users to stake their ATOM and receive dATOM in return. The dATOM token functions as a liquid receipt for the user's staked position. It allows holders to earn staking rewards that are automatically compounded into the value of the token. Because dATOM remains liquid, users can deploy it across various decentralized finance applications for activities such as providing liquidity or collateral, all while continuing to benefit from the underlying staking rewards. A key feature of the protocol is its liquid stake migration, which enables users to convert their existing staked ATOM positions into dATOM without waiting for the standard unstaking period.
