Kintsugi BTC, or kBTC, is a Bitcoin-backed asset designed to enable the use of Bitcoin within the Kusama network's decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. It functions as a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset on Kusama, meaning each kBTC token is fully collateralized by an equal amount of Bitcoin. The primary goal of kBTC is to open the value of Bitcoin to Kusama, allowing Bitcoin holders to utilize their assets in various DeFi applications across other Kusama parachains, such as Karura, Shiden, and Moonriver. Kintsugi is described as the "canary network" for the Polkadot-based Interlay project and its interBTC tokens. It shares the same codebase as Interlay but focuses on innovation and acts as an experimental network with real economic value deployed on Kusama. The kBTC system operates through a decentralized network of collateralized vaults. Users can mint kBTC by locking their Bitcoin with one of these vaults. The deposited Bitcoin is secured and insured by additional collateral held within the vault, which can involve various digital assets. This multi-collateral insurance system ensures that users can redeem their kBTC for actual Bitcoin at any time. If a vault misbehaves, its collateral is "slashed," and users are reimbursed, contributing to the system's trustless and decentralized nature. Anyone can choose to become a vault operator, further enhancing the decentralization and security of the network. The Kintsugi network also has its native utility token called KINT. KINT holders can participate in network governance by voting on protocol upgrades and resource allocation, and the token is also used for paying transaction fees within the Kintsugi parachain. The Kintsugi project was founded by Alexei Zamyatin and Dominik Harz, two PhD researchers from Imperial College London. It represents an effort to bridge Bitcoin with other blockchain ecosystems like Polkadot and Ethereum in a decentralized manner. It is important to note that a separate wrapped Bitcoin token also exists under the symbol kBTC, which is issued by the exchange Kraken.
