The Sandbox is a community-driven metaverse platform where creators can build and monetize voxel assets and gaming experiences on the blockchain. The ecosystem consists of three primary products: VoxEdit, a 3D modeling tool for asset creation; a Marketplace for buying and selling assets as NFTs; and the Game Maker, which allows users to build interactive 3D games without needing coding knowledge.
Originally a mobile game developed by Pixowl, The Sandbox was later acquired by Animoca Brands. The project is currently transitioning into a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). This evolution is designed to transfer governance and control to the community, specifically SAND and LAND holders, who will vote on platform updates and ecosystem grants.
SAND is an ERC-20 utility token that serves as the foundation of the ecosystem. It is used for marketplace transactions, including buying and selling LAND and NFT assets. Additionally, it provides access to games, allows for avatar customization, facilitates governance voting within the DAO, and can be staked to earn rewards and resources like Gems and Catalysts for asset creation.
While there are several decentralized metaverses in the market, The Sandbox distinguishes itself through a gaming-centric approach and a robust creator economy. It offers advanced game-building tools and a 'Minecraft-style' aesthetic, focusing heavily on enabling users to build and monetize complex interactive experiences rather than focusing strictly on social networking or events.
The ecosystem features a maximum supply of 3,000,000,000 SAND tokens. Rather than burning tokens, the project utilizes a circular economy model. A 5% fee is captured from all transaction volumes, with half of those funds allocated to the Staking Pool for holder rewards and the other half directed to the Foundation to fund high-quality content and creator grants.

The attacker minted unbacked SAND on Base and BNB Smart Chain through compromised bridge permissions.The Sandbox disabled transfers involving both networks while keeping Ethereum and Polygon SAND unaffected.Upbit and Bithumb halted SAND deposits and withdrawals after detecting a possible security incident.On-chain researchers estimated that about 14.75 million Ethereum-backed SAND left the bridge adapter.The Sandbox plans to compensate eligible liquidity providers based on balances recorded before the attack.
