Polygon is evolving into Polygon 2.0, a network of interconnected ZK-powered chains. POL is a "hyperproductive" token designed to secure this expanded ecosystem. While MATIC was limited to securing a single chain, POL allows validators to secure multiple chains simultaneously across the network.
It is a technical upgrade rather than a simple rename. It involves a new smart contract and updated tokenomics, though the migration itself is a 1:1 swap from MATIC. Major trading platforms, including LBank, have updated their listings to reflect the new POL ticker symbol.
Generally, no action is required. Most major exchanges like LBank handled the migration automatically for their users. If you held MATIC on the exchange during the transition, your tokens should have been converted to POL automatically. You should check your exchange's official announcements if you have specific questions about your balance.
Manual action is required for tokens held on the Ethereum mainnet, as they do not auto-migrate. Holders must use the official Polygon Portal to perform the upgrade manually. This step is recommended for those who wish to use their tokens for staking or as gas within the updated ecosystem.
POL introduces a multi-chain staking model. In the future, it will allow users to stake their tokens once and "restake" them to secure additional chains within the Polygon ecosystem, such as Supernets. This allows participants to potentially earn multiple streams of rewards for their contribution to network security.
