Algorand (ALGO) FAQ
ALGO has a fixed hard cap of 10 billion tokens. All tokens were minted at the network's launch in 2019. However, they are not all in circulation at once. They are released into the market through a structured distribution schedule managed by the Algorand Foundation. This controlled release is designed to be completed by 2030, ensuring a predictable growth in circulating supply over time.
The network is transitioning from passive rewards to incentivized consensus. To earn rewards, participants are encouraged to run a participation node or engage in liquid staking through supported platforms. Running a node typically requires committing a minimum of 30,000 ALGO. For users with smaller holdings, liquid staking options allow them to contribute to network security and earn rewards without the high technical requirements of running a full node.
Unlike other blockchains that burn fees or distribute them directly to miners, Algorand directs all transaction fees—which are a minimum of 0.001 ALGO—into a specialized 'Fee Sink.' These accumulated funds are held by the protocol to ensure long-term network sustainability. Future governance decisions will determine how these funds are ultimately used to support the ecosystem and maintain the chain's security.
Pure Proof-of-Stake is a unique consensus mechanism that utilizes 'cryptographic sortition' to randomly and secretly select users to propose and vote on blocks. This method ensures that the network remains decentralized and secure while achieving instant finality. Because of this design, the network cannot be split or 'hard forked,' meaning once a block is confirmed, it is permanent and cannot be altered.
Opting-In is a security feature built into the protocol level. Unlike other networks where any token can be sent to your address without permission, this network requires users to explicitly authorize an asset before it can be received. This prevents 'spam tokens' or unwanted assets from appearing in a user's wallet. It provides a layer of protection against malicious actors attempting to clutter wallets or perform phishing attacks through unsolicited transfers.
