This means the amount of rETH in your wallet stays the same, but its value relative to ETH increases over time as staking rewards accumulate. This structure is often more tax-efficient in various jurisdictions, as value accrual may be treated as capital gains upon sale rather than immediate income.
RPL serves as the governance and insurance token for the protocol. Following the Saturn 0 upgrade, RPL became optional for basic node operation; however, staking it still offers significant advantages. Node operators who stake RPL receive higher commissions and additional rewards. Furthermore, RPL holders gain voting power in the Protocol DAO (pDAO), allowing them to participate in key governance decisions.
Because rETH is a value-accruing token, rewards are reflected in the rETH/ETH exchange rate rather than a balance increase. To calculate your profit, you compare the exchange rate at the time of acquisition with the current rate. As the protocol earns rewards, the amount of ETH that each rETH token represents grows, increasing its overall value relative to the underlying asset.
Direct redemptions through the protocol depend on the Deposit Pool's capacity. If all ETH in the pool is actively staking, the protocol cannot immediately burn rETH for ETH. During these periods, users can utilize secondary markets like LBank to trade their rETH. This ensures liquidity remains available even when the protocol's internal deposit pool is fully utilized.
The Saturn 1 upgrade introduced Megapools, which allow node operators to manage multiple validators under a single smart contract. This significantly reduces gas costs and management complexity. Additionally, the protocol has reduced the required bond for operators from higher amounts down to 4 ETH, making it more accessible for individuals to run nodes and contribute to network decentralization.
Rocket Pool employs a collateral-based safety mechanism to protect rETH holders. Node operators must provide their own ETH as a bond when setting up a validator. If an operator is slashed or penalized on the network, their personal bond is used to cover the losses first.
