Pactus utilizes a unique consensus mechanism called Solid State Proof of Stake (SSPoS). This variant of Proof of Stake removes the need for delegation or miners, enabling direct participation from users. The algorithm is designed so that only one valid block proposer exists per round, which effectively prevents chain forks. By maintaining a consistent 10-second block time and utilizing a sortition algorithm to select a rotating committee of 51 validators, Pactus ensures high security and finality without the complexity of traditional staking systems.
Pactus is designed to be highly accessible, capable of running on low-power devices like a Raspberry Pi Zero with energy consumption as low as 0.7W. Hardware requirements for a full node include 2 physical CPU cores, 2–4 GB of RAM, and approximately 40 GB of storage. Staking is very flexible: the minimum requirement is just 1 PAC, while the maximum is 1,000 PAC per validator. To enhance network decentralization, users with more than 1,000 PAC are encouraged to run multiple validator nodes.
The total supply of PAC is capped at 42,000,000 tokens. The network generates a fixed reward of 1 PAC per block, resulting in approximately 8,640 PAC daily based on a 10-second block time. Following the PIP-43 update, rewards are split: 0.7 PAC goes to the validator who proposed the block, while 0.3 PAC is allocated to the Pactus Foundation. These foundation funds are dedicated to long-term development, ecosystem growth, and supporting the network's decentralized infrastructure.
