A primary feature of the original project was its elastic supply mechanism, often referred to as rebasing. The goal of this mechanism was to help the token maintain a stable value relative to a target asset. When the supply expanded, a portion of the new tokens was directed toward a community-managed treasury. Yam was notable for its fair launch model. There was no pre-mine, no venture capital involvement, and no initial allocation of tokens for the founding team. Instead, tokens were distributed entirely to users who participated in liquidity mining by locking up other specified assets in the protocol. This approach was intended to ensure that the project was community-owned from its inception. Shortly after its initial release, a critical bug was discovered in the rebasing contract. This bug made the governance system unable to reach a quorum, effectively locking the treasury. The community and developers quickly mobilized to migrate the ecosystem to a new version of the token. This transition involved multiple stages, moving from the original version to a temporary governance token and eventually to a fully audited third version. Since its early history as a rebase experiment, the project has evolved into a decentralized autonomous organization known as a DAO. The community voted to disable the elastic supply feature and pivoted the project toward becoming a launchpad for other decentralized applications. Today, the project focuses on supporting a variety of sub-projects within its ecosystem, including platforms for synthetic assets and smart contract insurance.
