The project is an Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible protocol and was built as a fork of the Compound Finance version two smart contracts. The platform allows individuals and institutions to supply various supported digital assets to earn interest or use them as collateral to borrow other cryptocurrencies. It distinguishes itself as the first native lending protocol on the Optimism network aiming to offer low cost and efficient transactions through layer two scaling solutions. The protocol uses a governance model where users can participate in decision making through staking. It features a revenue sharing mechanism where rewards are distributed to participants based on their involvement in the ecosystem. In May 2024 the protocol experienced a major security incident. An attacker exploited a precision loss vulnerability within the smart contracts which is a known issue associated with some forks of the Compound codebase. The exploit specifically targeted newly created markets where the attacker manipulated collateral factors to drain funds from the protocol. In response to the breach the development team paused the markets on the Optimism network to prevent further unauthorized activity while investigating the root cause. The incident prompted a series of post mortem reports from security firms and the team made efforts to communicate with the exploiter to recover the assets. Today Sonne Finance remains a known entity in the decentralized finance space though its reputation has been significantly impacted by the security breach. The team continues to work on protocol security and ecosystem recovery to maintain its position as a native liquidity provider on its supported networks.
