Mento is a decentralized, multi-currency stable asset protocol built on the Celo blockchain, an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible network. Its primary goal is to foster global financial inclusion by providing stable and accessible financial tools through Web3 technology. The protocol enables users to create, manage, and exchange stablecoins designed to track the value of various fiat currencies from around the world, rather than solely relying on the US dollar. Mento currently supports a diverse range of stablecoins, including the Celo Dollar (cUSD), Euro (cEUR), Brazilian Real (cReal), CFA Franc (eXOF), and Celo Kenyan Shilling (cKES). Mento operates on a hybrid stability model, where each stable asset is backed by a diversified and over-collateralized reserve of digital assets. Stability mechanisms include adjusting the supply of stable assets in response to demand changes and integrating oracles for accurate exchange rates. The platform also incorporates features such as a Circuit Breaker mechanism to protect against abnormal price fluctuations and a Stablecoin Factory tool that allows organizations to easily create new stablecoins pegged to local currencies. Key functionalities of Mento include facilitating payments, cross-border remittances, micro-credit, and foreign exchange (FX) trading. It integrates with the FiatConnect API, allowing crypto wallets to connect directly with traditional payment systems for seamless fiat deposits and withdrawals. The MENTO token is the native governance token of the Mento Protocol, deployed as an ERC-20 token on the Celo blockchain. Holding MENTO allows individuals to actively participate in the platform's development and decision-making processes through governance voting. Users can lock their MENTO tokens to receive veMENTO (vote-escrowed MENTO), which grants them governance power. MENTO's functions also encompass ecosystem incentives, serving as a risk buffer reserve, and allocating protocol reserve assets. The MENTO token and its associated governance structure were launched following a community vote to further enhance the protocol's development and move towards self-sustainability. Mento Protocol was developed by Mento Labs, which was founded in Germany in 2022. The project's vision is to onboard a billion Web3 users by enabling the adoption of digital assets globally. Mento stablecoins are integrated within a growing ecosystem, including various DeFi platforms and wallets.
