Inter Stable Token, commonly referred to as IST, is a decentralized, cryptocurrency-backed stablecoin project developed by the Inter Protocol on the Agoric blockchain. As a part of the broader Cosmos ecosystem, IST was designed to function as an IBC-enabled asset, meaning it can be transferred across various interconnected blockchains using the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. Its primary purpose was to provide a stable medium of exchange and unit of account for the decentralized finance (DeFi) space within the interchain network. The project utilized several key mechanisms to manage the token. The first was the Parity Stability Module, which allowed users to mint IST by providing other established stablecoins at a one-to-one ratio. The second was a system of vaults that enabled users to mint IST by depositing overcollateralized assets, such as ATOM or other supported interchain tokens. Additionally, IST served a critical role as the native fee token for the Agoric network, where it was used to pay for transaction costs and smart contract execution. Governance of the Inter Protocol and IST was handled by a decentralized autonomous organization known as the BLDer DAO, which is composed of holders of Agoric's native staking token, BLD. This community, supported by an elected Economic Committee of experts, was responsible for setting protocol parameters, approving new types of collateral, and ensuring the overall stability of the system. In mid-2025, the Agoric community and the Inter Protocol team initiated a strategic sunsetting process for the project. Following a governance vote, the protocol began winding down its operations to allow the Agoric ecosystem to refocus its resources on other core development initiatives. During this transition, vault minting was disabled, and users were provided with a specific timeframe to return their IST tokens and reclaim their deposited collateral. As of early 2026, the protocol has effectively retired from its original role as an active minting platform, though the token may still be referenced in historical contexts or found in secondary distributions within the interchain ecosystem.
