Hylo USD (hyUSD) is a decentralized, overcollateralized stablecoin on the Solana blockchain, pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar. Unlike other stablecoins, it is not backed by fiat cash or traditional assets. Instead, hyUSD is collateralized by a diverse basket of yield-bearing Solana Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs), such as JitoSOL, mSOL, and JupSOL. This unique backing mechanism provides a "DeFi native" foundation for its stability and potential for yield.
xSOL is the "volatile" counterpart to hyUSD within the Hylo protocol. It represents a leveraged long position on SOL, but uniquely offers this leverage with no liquidation risk. Its primary function is to absorb the price fluctuations of the underlying collateral assets that back hyUSD. By taking on this volatility, xSOL helps protect the hyUSD stablecoin's dollar peg and ensures the overall stability of the system.
Hylo USD maintains its peg through an "oracle-free" or "internal pricing" design. The protocol allows users to directly mint or redeem hyUSD for an equivalent value of collateral, priced internally at $1, with zero slippage. This creates an efficient arbitrage mechanism. If hyUSD trades below $1 on secondary markets, traders can buy it cheaply and redeem it for $1 worth of collateral, profiting and pushing its market price back to the peg. Conversely, if it trades above $1, new hyUSD can be minted and sold.
The Hylo protocol employs a Collateral Ratio (CR) to monitor the system's health. In the event of a significant drop in the underlying SOL price, several mechanisms activate. Firstly, xSOL holders absorb the initial losses, as xSOL's value can decrease significantly. If further recapitalization is needed and xSOL's value is depleted, the "Stability Pool" (comprising staked hyUSD or sHYUSD) acts as a backstop. sHYUSD from the pool is converted into xSOL to recapitalize the system, ensuring the stablecoin's peg remains intact.
Staked hyUSD (sHYUSD) generates yield from three primary sources. Firstly, the underlying Solana Liquid Staking Tokens (LSTs) naturally earn staking rewards. Secondly, sHYUSD holders receive a portion of the protocol fees generated from minting and redeeming tokens. Thirdly, they earn a share of the "volatility premium" paid by xSOL users. The project considers this yield sustainable because it is derived from "DeFi native" sources—actual staking rewards and protocol fees—rather than inflationary token emissions, which often characterize unsustainable high-yield protocols.
No, users holding xSOL cannot be liquidated in the traditional sense. xSOL is a tokenized position representing the "excess value" of the collateral pool, not a traditional loan with margin calls. While its value can drop significantly if the price of SOL falls, it doesn't trigger liquidation events.
