Ether.fi Staked BTC, known as eBTC, is a crypto project designed to bring Bitcoin's value into the Ethereum blockchain ecosystem. It is an ERC-20 token that represents Bitcoin that has been deposited and secured through the Ether.fi protocol. The main purpose of eBTC is to allow Bitcoin holders to engage with Ethereum's decentralized finance (DeFi) applications without needing to sell their Bitcoin. This makes Bitcoin more productive by enabling participation in various DeFi opportunities. The process for using eBTC involves users depositing their Bitcoin into a secure multi-signature vault system managed by Ether.fi. For each Bitcoin deposited, an equivalent amount of eBTC is created on the Ethereum blockchain. Smart contracts are used to ensure that the eBTC supply is always backed 1:1 by the underlying Bitcoin. Users can convert their eBTC back to Bitcoin by burning the eBTC tokens and retrieving the corresponding Bitcoin. eBTC is described as a Bitcoin-backed liquid restaking token, aiming to simplify yield optimization and expand utility within the Web3 space. It emphasizes decentralization and transparency in its design, aiming to create a more trustless connection between the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks. This project offers opportunities for earning through both staking and restaking. The technology behind eBTC is built on the Ethereum blockchain, leveraging its decentralized infrastructure and smart contract capabilities. It integrates with specialized platforms for staking, such as Babylon, and uses restaking services through partnerships with entities like EigenLayer, Symbiotic, and Karak.
