CRV serves as the central governance and incentive token for Curve Finance. Its utility is primarily divided into three functions. First, it is used to incentivize liquidity by rewarding users who provide assets to the protocol's pools. Second, it enables governance, allowing participants to vote on which pools receive the most rewards. Finally, it allows users to earn a share of the protocol’s trading fees when the tokens are locked into the system.
To access the full utility of the token, users must "vote-lock" their CRV for a period ranging from one week to four years. In exchange, they receive veCRV (vote-escrowed CRV). The amount of veCRV received increases with the length of the lock period. This non-transferable asset grants three major benefits: it can boost liquidity rewards by up to 2.5x, provides voting power within the DAO, and entitles the holder to a 50% share of all protocol trading fees. Voting power decays linearly as the unlock date approaches.
