Aftermath Staked SUI (afSUI) is Aftermath Finance's liquid staked token, issued when users stake their native SUI tokens through the Aftermath protocol. It extends Sui's native staking mechanism, enabling permissionless delegation and enhancing capital efficiency through DeFi integrations. The token's primary goal is to improve the functionality and sustainability of decentralized applications on the SUI network by making staked SUI liquid and usable.
To stake SUI and mint afSUI, navigate to the Aftermath Finance stake page with SUI tokens in your wallet. You can then select an active validator to delegate your SUI tokens to. After choosing a validator and specifying the amount of SUI to stake, afSUI will be minted to your wallet instantly. You have the flexibility to split your SUI across multiple validators by performing several staking actions.
afSUI is a value-accruing token, meaning its price relative to SUI increases as underlying staking rewards automatically compound each epoch. The yield for afSUI is derived from all SUI tokens staked for afSUI across all validators. The Sui network operates in epochs, and the exchange rate of afSUI for SUI grows with each passing epoch due to compounded rewards. Upon unstaking, users receive their initial SUI plus any accumulated rewards.
There are two methods to unstake afSUI. The first, "Instant Unstake," allows for immediate redemption of afSUI for SUI without an unbonding period. This incurs a variable fee (0.1% - 5%) based on the amount unstaked relative to available SUI in the instant unstake reserves. The second method, "Delayed Unstake," converts your afSUI to SUI after an unbonding period, which typically concludes at the end of an epoch, potentially taking up to 24 hours.
Aftermath Finance designed afSUI to be as fungible and composable as the SUI token itself, while still generating staking rewards. This versatility means afSUI can be swapped for other tokens, deposited into liquidity pools (e.g., afSUI/SUI), used as collateral in lending protocols, and bridged to other blockchains. It has been integrated into various partner protocols on Sui, enabling users to earn additional yield and participate in DeFi activities.
