The technology behind Plebbit relies on three main components to manage data without a central authority. It uses the InterPlanetary File System, or IPFS, for storing immutable content. It uses the InterPlanetary Naming System, or IPNS, for content that needs to be updated or changed. For real time communication and publishing, it utilizes the libp2p Gossipsub protocol. Because the core protocol does not run on a blockchain, users do not have to pay transaction fees to post or comment. Instead, each community, often called a subplebbit, operates like a decentralized swarm where data is updated periodically across the network. Moderation and spam protection are handled at the individual community level. Since there are no global admins, the creator of a specific subplebbit has full control over its moderation rules. To prevent spam without a central filter, community owners can implement various challenges, such as captchas or requirements for users to prove ownership of specific digital assets before they can participate. The PLEB token serves as the governance and utility asset for the ecosystem. While the base protocol can be used without any tokens, PLEB allows the community to participate in the Plebbit DAO. Token holders can vote on proposals related to project funding, grants, and the curation of default community lists. On the platform, the token can be used for tipping other users, providing awards for quality content, and participating in curation by voting on which communities should be featured on the main interface. The project is designed to be client agnostic, allowing anyone to build their own interface or application on top of the protocol. Several existing clients offer different user experiences, such as those mimicking traditional forum layouts or imageboards.
