Maya Protocol is a decentralized, non-custodial liquidity and exchange protocol built on the Cosmos SDK. It enables cross-chain swaps of native assets, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and ATOM, without the need for wrapping, bridges, or custodians. The protocol operates similarly to THORChain, but features a permissionless validator set and no slashing. Maya Protocol aims to revolutionize native swaps and capital efficiency in a non-custodial way, contributing to the growth and adoption of decentralized finance (DeFi). It allows users to swap real native assets in a fully permissionless manner, with no KYC required, and self-custody, which helps minimize exposure to centralized and counterparty risks. CACAO is the native token of Maya Protocol and serves as a universal bridge currency within the ecosystem. It powers the entire Maya Protocol ecosystem, including MAYAChain and AZTECChain, and provides economic incentives necessary to secure the network. CACAO is essential for liquidity pairing, bonding, and incentives. Nodes on Maya Protocol invest CACAO as collateral, and if they act maliciously, they risk losing their investment as a penalty. CACAO also protects assets within the protocol, and the system is designed to ensure there is always enough CACAO to cover potential losses. CACAO has several key roles, including acting as a settlement asset for liquidity pools and being consumed as transaction fees on the network. All liquidity pools within Maya Protocol consist of an external native token paired against CACAO. This design eliminates the need for complex exchange pairs, as CACAO connects all other currencies. A single-sided staking feature, known as the CACAO pool, is planned to allow CACAO holders to earn yield without facing impermanent loss. This feature is intended to strengthen Maya Protocol's security model and evolve its income distribution. The Maya Protocol team designed a different economic model for nodes to increase capital efficiency without compromising security, which they call Liquidity Nodes. Future plans include features like Savers, which will enable users to have single-sided asset exposure using synthetics, and Aztec, a project in the algorithmic stablecoin space. Maya Protocol leverages smart contracts to enhance flexibility in crypto economies, empowering developers to innovate with new use cases for Maya derivatives. The protocol emphasizes user ownership, allowing individuals to send and receive assets from swaps directly to their self-custody wallets.
